Call for Papers
The AIDA will hold its 16th conference at the University of Catania from June 23 to 26, 2026. Founded in 1992, AIDA is the leading international association for the study of Arabic dialects, bringing together scholars from around the world who are interested in all aspects of Arabic dialectology.
Submissions are welcome in all areas of Arabic dialectology and sociolinguistics, including:

- Dialect description and comparison (phonology, morphology, syntax);
- Dialect geography;
- Lexicography and historical dialectology;
- Language contact (synchrony and diachrony) and arabic-lexified pidgins and creoles
- Sociolinguistics (language variation and change, historical sociolinguistics);
- Sociology of language (language policies and ideologies, discourse analysis, etc.).

Please submit an abstract of approximately 300 words (excluding bibliography) for a 20-minute presentation via EasyAbs: https://easyabs.linguistlist.org/submit/AIDA/.

Do not include your name or any identifying information in the abstract. Indicate if your submission is for a thematic panel. Abstracts may be in Arabic, English, or French and should clearly present the theoretical and methodological background as well as the research findings, and their context.

Call for Panels
Panel conveners are expected to submit a proposal containing a 500-word rationale, along with a list of anticipated titles and speakers, to: [email protected]. Upon acceptance of the panel, the speakers will submit their abstracts via EasyAbs, specifying the title of the panel they will be presenting in.

Thematic panels should follow the structure of the conference, lasting no more than 2 sessions. Each session will include 20-minute presentations followed by 10 minutes of Q&A (allowing for 3 to 8 papers in total). Panels may also feature 30-minute introduction or discussion sessions.

- Notification of Acceptance: June 29, 2025

Fees
- Early-bird registration: €120 (otherwise €135);
- AIDA membership fees: €20 for MA and Ph.D students, €30 for others.

Funding for Young Scholars
Ten young scholars will be selected by AIDA’s Executive Board to receive financial support (up to €300 per person) to help cover travel and/or conference fees. Interested young scholars should apply for the participation grant after their papers are accepted, via email to Bettina Leitner at [email protected].
