ATISA XII: Translation and Interpreting as Unequal Exchange: A Return to Power?
April 10-12, 2026
State University of New York at New Paltz
New Paltz, New York
The so-called “power turn” that emerged in Translation and Interpreting Studies in the late nineteen nineties construed translation and interpreting as complex sites where deeply embedded power dynamics and systemic inequalities are continuously negotiated. The question of power has acquired new relevance today as long-standing linguistic asymmetries are reflected and consolidated in the output of machine/AI translation and interpreting; unequal access to linguistic services is exacerbated by historically unprecedented dislocations of peoples as a result of conflict and the climate crisis; and colonial asymmetries continue to shape what gets translated and how those works are packaged and reviewed, not to mention what languages are included in translation and interpreting programs. This ATISA conference calls upon researchers in all fields of Translation and Interpreting Studies to return to the question of power with a new urgency and from new vantage points.
Conference papers may address, but are not limited to, the following themes:
• Power dynamics in institutional interpreting and translation settings
• Translation policies and language rights in multilingual societies
• Translation flows
• The Geo-politics of publishing academic and literary translations
• Re-thinking T&I ethics
• Translation and interpreting in legal and medical settings
• Translation/interpreting in conflict situations
• Translation/interpreting and migration
• New approaches in translation and interpreting education
• Economic aspects and labor conditions in the global translation industry
• Digital translation technologies and their impact on linguistic inequality
• Translation and interpreting as sites of resistance and social justice
