The Graduate Students of Linguistics (GSLING) at the University of South Carolina is now accepting abstract submissions for presentations for the Spring 2023 Student Research Symposium (SRS). This year’s conference will be a hybrid event, held virtually through Zoom and in-person at the University of South Carolina. The conference will take place on Saturday, April 8th, 2023, from 9am – 5pm.
We are pleased to announce keynote speakers Dr. Nina Moreno (University of South Carolina) and Dr. Marta González-Lloret (University of Hawaii – Manoa).
Dr. Nina Moreno is an Associate Professor of Spanish at the University of South Carolina (USC) in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, and a Core Faculty member of the Linguistics Program. Her areas of expertise include second language acquisition (SLA), computer-assisted language learning (CALL), and L2 teacher education. More recently, her research includes issues of learner/speaker identity among heritage speakers of Spanish and of Kichwa, and language ideologies in higher education. She has published in peer-reviewed journals such as Language Learning, Foreign Language Annals, and CALICO, and has co-authored books published by Edinumen (Spain) and Routledge (UK). Her latest co-authored work (with P. Malovrh), Second Language Identity: Awareness, Ideology, and Assessment in Higher Education, is forthcoming (Cambridge University Press).
Dr. Marta González-Lloret is a Professor of Spanish and Applied Linguistics at the University of Hawaiʻi, Manoa. Her main areas of research are at the intersections of technology and Task-based Language Teaching and technology and L2 pragmatics. She is also interested in Conversation Analysis for L2 interaction, teacher training, and assessment, especially performance-based assessment. Among her recent publications is The Routledge handbook of second language acquisition and technology (2022) edited with Nicole Ziegler and the 2020 special Issue of CALICO journal (37,1) on Exploring the Interface of Interlanguage (L2) Pragmatics and Digital Spaces. She is co-editor of the John Benjamins Task-based Language Teaching book series and editor of the NFLRC book series Pragmatics & Language Learning.
We gladly invite submissions from undergraduate and graduate students in language-related disciplines, including linguistics, anthropology, education, psychology, and philosophy. Paper presentations will be 20 minutes long, followed by a 7-minute discussion period.
Abstracts should be no longer than 500 words, excluding references, with an additional page if necessary for figures and tables. Abstracts will undergo blind review, so author names should not appear anywhere on abstracts. Abstracts with identifying information will not be considered.
The deadline for abstract submission is Saturday, March 4. Those accepted will be notified no later than Friday, March 24.
