Methods and Techniques in Phonetics of Signing and Speech (MaTiPSS) provides a forum for methodological research in phonetic sciences. In phonetic sciences our questions originate in the humanities, social sciences, and clinical sciences. On the other hand, our methods are based on observation of human behaviour and human interaction. With this in mind the following definitions are meant to be inclusive of all forms of human communication.
The focus of MaTiPSS is:
- Methods that involve measurements of human language production and/or its perceivable results and related phenomena as transmitted through any modality including: acoustic systems (speech sounds, whistled and drummed speech) visual systems (signed languages and signing), and tactile systems (hand-to-hand signed languages, speech, and manual alphabet), as well as synthesis of any of the above.
- Combining methods - e.g. using a combination of acoustic measurements with neurological data, or methodological triangulation using different articulatory measurement systems - is encouraged.
- Related phenomena include singing, paralinguistic communication, and other relevant phenomena.
- Best practices in topics such as the dissemination of phonetic methodology in: data processing, outreach, community work - including especially working with marginalised and under resourced communities, and teaching.
